According to the customs statistics of the People’s Republic of China,
China increased the supply of electricity from Russia for the period from January to July of this year by 70%. As we can see, Russia is increasing the supply of not only oil and gas to China, but also electricity.
Where does Russia get additional volumes of electricity to supply it to China? At the very beginning, namely on the 7th day of the occupation war that Putin unleashed against Ukraine, Russia seized the Ukrainian nuclear power plant, which it holds under its control to this day.
Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant is the 3rd largest in the world in terms of its size, as well as the largest power plant in Europe. The station consists of 6 operating power units that generate 40-42 billion kWh of electricity annually.
On September 11, 2022, the Russians disconnected the power units of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant from the power system of Ukraine.
We do not have reliable information that Russia has redirected electricity from the nuclear power plant seized in Ukraine to China, as in our opinion there is no technical possibility for this yet, but most likely, Putin is using stolen electricity from Ukraine to make up for the lack of it in the Russian internal market, which arose as a result of a sharp increase in electricity supplies to China.
